It would appear that the vast majority of folks that are aware of and interested in the Nephilim believe that they were giants. The King James Version of the Bible was printed in 1611. This is what it says in Genesis 6:4, the first occurance in the English language of these beings:
"There were giants (Nephilim) on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
In another version it says, "...these were the heroes of old, men of renown." (NIV)
In the KJV, the translators did not know what the word the word "Nephilim" meant. So they translated it as "giants". Thus everyone afterward assumed that the giants were the same as Nephilim.
The Hebrew for "giant" is gibbor. Totally different from, and has nothing to do with the word, Nephilim. The sons of God are created spirit men,or what we call angels. The Hebrew word Nephilim literally means "the fallen ones." Thus the sons of God were the Nephilim, fallen angels or Fallen Ones. For they fell from grace, fell from Heaven and fell to earth. The giants didn't fall from anywhere.
The offspring of the Nephilim were the gibbor, or giants; Hybrids of humans with the Fallen Angels. Enoch contends that the demons that inhabit the world today are the disposessed spirits of these offspring of angels with humans.
In my mind, the giants were not important. But the Fallen Angels, the gods of pre-history, were the powerful spirit men, full of fascination and wisdom and magic and supernatural ability, who ruled the earth and caused the sin and violence and bloodshed that precipitated the Flood in those ancient times.
The giants were probably bungling oafs. That's why a 17 year old youth called David could skip around Goliath and sink a stone in his head before he had time to draw his sword.
And why the Israelites under Joshua could conquer the Promised Land and capture "60 of the giant cities of Bashan."
Because of their sin, these Fallen Ones are locked up in a subterranean prison called the Bottomless Pit, the Abyss and Tartarus. This where the "gods" are kept, according to Homer.
Furthermore, in Ephesians 4:8 it says of Jesus;
"Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth..."
..meaning he went down to Tartarus to "preach" to these fallen spirit men, as recorded also in 2 Peter 3:19.
So this Bottomless Pit is under this earth, according to Ephesians.
In Rev. 9:1 it says a "star" (a common metaphor for an angel), "falls" from Heaven with the key to this Bottomless Pit. We are told that these nefarious spirit men are once more released onto the earth. We are told that they have a king over them whose name is Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, which means, "the Destroyer."
This man is referred to as "the Beast from the Abyss." He goes on to become what we call the Antichrist. That's why in Rev. 17:11, referring to the Antichrist it says that he;
"Once was...Now is not...And will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction" (because he is the Destroyer).
So there is no debate as to where the Antichrist is going to come from or who he is. He is the king over the gods who;
"Once was"..in the days before the Flood and who reigned with the rest of the Fallen Ones;
"he now is not.." because he is presently incarcerated in Tartarus.
"And will come up out of the Abyss and go to his destruction..." in the near future Apocalypse when he will be released once more (Rev. 9:1).
Further, there is no debate as to his name; Abaddon and/or Apollyon.
But "Apollyon" is nothing more than how the Greeks spell Apollo. And Apollo, as you know, was one of the main pantheon of Greek and Roman gods along with Mars, Pluto, Mercury, Zeus, Jupiter, etc.
So the name of the Antichrist and where he comes from is plainly given in Holy Scripture. His name is Apollo and he is presently locked up in Tartarus. The Antichrist is not Hitler or Saddam Hussein or some Arab prince who presently abides in Jordan or anywhere else. These truths have been under our noses for thousands of years and nobody saw it (or very few).
Apollo is a fallen angel, a Nephilim and it is he who will be the Beast from the Abyss, the Antichrist, son of perdition and lawless one.
" Nephilim" means, "the fallen ones." This ties in with several other references to angels as "fallen ones" in Revelation and elsewhere i.e.
"A star FELL from Heaven with the key to the Bottomless Pit..." Rev. 9:1
I beheld Satan as lightning FALL from Heaven..." Luke 10:18
"And the stars (angels) of Heaven FELL unto the earth like figs falling from a fig tree..." Rev. 6:13
"There are seven kings; five are FALLEN, and one is, and the other is not yet come..." Rev:17:10 (Referring to the seven "heads" who are seven Fallen Angels or Nephilim, and Apollo, who is the eighth, is named in the next verse).
Just as Lucifer is a "fallen angel," I think it is clear from the scope of Scripture in reference to this topic, that the Fallen Angels are exactly that i.e. Fallen Ones or Nephilim. Scripture also concurs with the legends of ancient Greece. Who were these "heroes" and gods of ancient myth? Why they were Apollo and Zeus and Mercury and Mars etc. And we had some female goddesses back then also; Hera, Demeter and Athena for instance, whom Athens was named after.
All this confusion comes from the King James Version where they didn't know what Nephilim meant, so they put in the word "giant" which has absolutely nothing to do with the Nephilim. But I wouldn't blame them. After all, the KJV was translated in 1611!
I am not interested in getting into heated debates with scholars who disagree with my thesis. If folks want to call the giants, (Gibbor), Nephilim, then that's their choice. It's not a life or death thing or a hanging offense. But I believe it is wrong.
I discovered in my years studying this topic, that the Nephilim are indeed the Fallen Angels, who are the powerful, supernatural gods who reigned and held sway on this earth for perhaps a 1,000 years prior to the Flood of Noah.(And more of them descended after the Flood. Rapha was the name of one of them).
And just as these "gods" descended to the earth and beguiled the humans in those bygone days, so they shall do so again when they appear both from below (Rev.9) and above (Rev.12) in the near coming Apocalypse, when they shall deceive "almost" the entire world.
If you want a more in-depth study of these and related matters, may I recommend you read my published works which are listed below.
Keep the faith.
