Watchmen

I just finished 2 hours and 43 minutes of "Watchmen" on DVD, and was amazed at the parallels to what is actually going on in the world today. Of course, most of it is going on behind closed doors, and the world at large is either blind to it or in denial. I wanted to share a link to Derek and Sharon Gilbert's discussion about this movie, in a podcast from P.I.D. Radio in March of 2009. It's fascinating stuff. With the sudden eruption of a new strain H1N1 (swine flu) over the last week, it seemed worth digging into the archives for an interview with one of our earliest guests. Molecular virologist Dr. Henry L. Niman is the founder and president of Recombinomics, Inc., and he tracks emerging diseases around the globe.

In May of 2005, Dr. Niman described for us the chain of events in an unusual story from South Korea, where a strain of flu virus created in a lab 65 years ago had turned up in sick and dying pigs. The World Health Organization responded with press releases denying that there was a problem.

WSN/33, a variant of H1N1, is a danger to humans. We can catch viruses from pigs, and this particular virus is one that we have no immunity against. Yet, at the time of the interview, the World Health Organization had only two scientists assigned to work full time tracking emerging diseases like this.

If Dr. Niman hadn’t stumbled onto the genetic sequence of the WSN/33 virus in a public database while doing research for a scientific paper, we might still be in the dark about that potential threat to human health.

After a summer of — well, reruns, we’re happy to start back into a regular weekly schedule of P.I.D. Radio. We really appreciate the kind words and prayers of the people who contacted us — and friends, like Tom Horn at Raiders News Network who told us he received dozens of e-mails asking us where we’d gone after we disappeared so quickly back in June.

We apologize for leaving people in the lurch, and unless God makes it clear that we’re supposed to be doing something else, we’re here for the foreseeable future.
