Announcing the Launch of My New Podcast, "The Burning Bush: Sharing Scripture Over Cigars"

Announcing the launch of my new podcast, "The Burning Bush: Sharing Scripture Over Cigars", where we share the message of the Bible, while enjoying a good cigar.
I just wanted to introduce you to the show. I had an idea that I believe God laid on my heart.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  What I'm going to be doing in this podcast is sharing Scripture and reading literature that applies to Scripture, or that allows me to share the Gospel, which is most important. The format of the show is basically this. I'm a cigar lover - and there's no sin in that - as far as I'm concerned. My Pastor years ago was Dr. Gene Scott. Some of you may have seen him on television. He was a controversial figure, but he had he had a church here in Los Angeles, which I used to attend. He passed away in 2005, and he was a cigar smoker. He used to go on television and sit in his studio, read from books and teach, and he would smoke cigars while he was doing it. He used to call his cigar a "burning bush", and I thought that was that was pretty clever!                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        My plan is to share Scripture with you, share the Gospel, and maybe build a little community of people who love cigars, and who are interested in learning more about the Bible. The format of the show is fundamentally this. I'm going to share what cigar I'm smoking at the beginning of each episode, and I'll give you the notes on the cigar. I'll let you know what the brand is, what the wrappers, binders, and fillers are, etc. I'll put links in the show notes to the manufacturer's website where you can find out more information on the cigars, and then we'll delve into whatever the topic of the day is.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    So there is some background on what the show is going to be like, and where I'd like to take it. You can listen and subscribe on your favorite podcast app, at www.theburningbushpodcast.com, on YouTube, or on RumbleI hope you'll take the time to check it out, and share it with anyone you think might enjoy it (or need to hear it). Have a great day, have a great cigar, and God bless. Thanks!

Fifteen Years Ago Today, We Lost Dr. Gene Scott

Fifteen years ago today, I lost my Pastor, and the world lost one of the greatest Bible teachers that God has ever given us. Dr. Gene Scott passed away on February 21, 2005, and it was a day I'll never forget.

At the time, I still did not have a computer, so I watched Dr. Scott every night at 10 p.m. during his weekday broadcast, and his live "Festivals" on Sunday night. I also picked up a shortwave radio so I could listen at any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It was President's day weekend 2005, and my Brother-in-law was going out of town, so he asked me to watch his dog for the weekend. I jumped at the chance, because I knew that I would be able to spend the whole 3 day weekend watching and listening to Dr. Scott online. This was going to be great! I stayed up until 2 or 3 in the morning on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, and as soon as I woke up, I was back online, taking it all in. I wished I had a computer so badly!

Anyway, to make a long story short, my Brother-in-law returned home around 3 in the afternoon on Monday, and after hearing about his weekend, I said goodbye, thanked him, and headed home. When I arrived at my house, I immediately went in and turned on my shortwave radio. It was 5 p.m., and the first thing that I heard was Doc's wife, Melissa, announcing that at 4:30 p.m., Dr. Gene Scott had passed away.

I just stood there. All I could do was stare at the radio. I didn't move. I was numb. They replayed the announcement over and over again, and I stood there listening to it, for what seemed like hours. I began aimlessly walking around the room. I felt a sense of loss and despair, as though someone in my immediate family had died. Even though I had never met the man, and was never any closer to him than the fourth or fifth row at the Cathedral, I considered him my spiritual father.

Dr. Scott taught me to look beyond the cookie-cutter brand of Christianity that is being force fed in most churches today. He taught me that you don't have to "check your brains at the door" when you enter a church building. He was not afraid to question mainstream teachings, and to consider that "church traditions" were not always correct. He was a bold, outspoken, and extremely intelligent teacher, and even though I have since come to disagree with some of his viewpoints, I'm honored to have called him my Pastor. I still miss you Doc. See you when I get home.

Press Release: Blessed Leaf Announces Release of Kairos

March 13, 2014 (Miami, Fla.) — Kyle Hoover and Chris Kelly, the leaders of BlessedLeaf.com, a Christian cigar-based ministry, announce the release of the long anticipated Blessed Leaf Kairos.

“This is a project that has been in our hearts for over a year. Our vision was to produce a great cigar with vintage tobaccos and have the proceeds go to ministry and missions efforts.” noted Kyle Hoover.

“For this project, we went back to our roots: Nicaraguan tobacco! This is a Nicaraguan puro in the Ezra Zion genre of blending. Since we are doing this for The Lord, it had to be the best work we could possibly do!” added Chris Kelly.

The Blessed Leaf Kairos is a 52 x 6.25 box press. The wrapper is Corojo 99 Rosado. The filler includes ligeros from Esteli and Jalapa. Total production is 4000 cigars of 100 boxes and 5 packs.

The Blessed Leaf Kairos is produced at the Casa Fernandez factory in Miami, Florida.

“We chose the name Kairos because of it’s unique meaning to this project. Kairos is defined as a specific moment in time when the Divine intervenes directly into your life. To us, there is a duel application. Obviously, as a person smokes the cigar they will have a “heavenly” smoking experience. Secondly, that the support raised for Christian missions will impact people’s lives with the gospel of Christ.” added Hoover.

The Blessed Leaf Kairos will be available for pre-order on BlessedLeaf.com and CigarFederation.com. The official launch herf will be on April 2 on BlessedLeaf.com.

Launch Of New Cigar-Themed Christian Ministry, "Blessed Leaf"

Kyle Hoover, co-owner of Ezra Zion Cigar Company and CigarFederation.com, announces the launch of a new cigar-themed Christian ministry, Blessed Leaf.

“Blessed Leaf is a unique idea, something that has never been done before. It’s a faith community–or in more basic terms–an “online church” for cigar smokers.” noted Hoover.

On BlessedLeaf.com, aficionados can create a profile page to join the Blessed Leaf community. Members can post content, access media, read faith-based articles and cigar reviews designed to strengthen them in their Christian walk.

“I know two things: The Bible and cigars. This is the culmination of a dream to bring those two passions together. My prayer is that this is a catalyst for cigar enthusiasts to become closer to Jesus, whether they have a relationship with Him now or not.” Hoover continued.

Beginning September 4th at 6pm CST, “Blessed Leaf LIVE!” will air on the BlessedLeaf.com homepage. This hour long show serves as the weekly service and will air every Wednesday evening. It will be hosted by Kyle Hoover and Chris Kelly. Guests will include believers from all around the cigar industry.

“A major part of this vision is the Featured Contributors. I want to create a platform where these guys can share their testimonies and teachings that will bless and encourage the members of Blessed Leaf. These are BOTL that either work professionally in the cigar industry or are avid cigar smokers in full-time pastoral ministry. Guys like Brian Berman, Kip Fisher, Nate McIntyre, The Don Fonseca, and my pastor Niles Holsinger will be posting some life-changing stuff.”

My "Convict Conditioning" Progress - Support Press - Step 1 (Close Grip)

I have finally met the Progression Standard for the close grip Support Press, which is the final phase of Step One of the Press Flag progression from "Convict Conditioning 2" by Paul "Coach" Wade. With the Support Press, you start out using a wide grip and gradually move the hand on the vertical bar closer to the horizontal bar. I started out with 5 second sets and worked up to 10 seconds before moving the grip in closer. Once you can hold the close grip for 10 seconds, it's on to Step Two.

This is actually the second day of doing 10 second holds. I am going to stay at this step in the progression until the 10 second hold becomes easy and second nature. This is a very difficult hold for me, and I have a lot of discomfort in my shoulder joints while performing it. I don't want to move too quickly and try to progress before I am ready. Patience is key. Listen to your body!

If any of you are working on the Press Flag Series, drop a comment, or email me and let me know how you're progressing. If not, what are you waiting for? Get your copies of  "Convict Conditioning" and "Convict Conditioning 2" today, and GET BUSY!

The art of voice-over is the backbone of commercials, animation, documentaries, and radio dramas produced for both national and local markets throughout the country. It is an ever-growing, lucrative field, and the demand for well-trained voice-over artists is increasing rapidly in our age of digital entertainment.

Now in its updated and revised third edition -- this is the primary instructional book in the voice-over field. A clearly written and practical primer for the beginner and a welcome refresher course for the professional, "Word of Mouth" contains voice-over exercises, sample copy, and essential advice about producing a demo, auditioning, self-promoting, getting an agent, and what to expect on the job.

It also provides exclusive and up-to-date lists of voice-over agents, coaches, workshops, and demo producers and duplicators. It is the standard text for numerous university communications, television, and acting department courses.

The book is accompanied by a 50-minute audio CD that demonstrates various techniques and styles of animation and commercial voice-over performed by ten top voice-over artists.

"Why Four Gospels?" by David Alan Black

In "Why Four Gospels?" noted Greek and New Testament scholar David Alan Black, concisely and clearly presents the case for the early development of the gospels, beginning with Matthew, rather than Mark. But this is much more than a discussion of the order in which the gospels were written. Using both internal data from the gospels themselves and an exhaustive and careful examination of the statements of the early church fathers, Dr. Black places each gospel in the context of the early development of Christianity.

Though Markan priority is the dominant position still in Biblical scholarship, Dr. Black argues that this position is not based on the best evidence available, that the internal evidence is often given more weight than it deserves and alternative explanations are dismissed or ignored. If you would like an outline of the basis for accepting both early authorship of the gospels and the priority of Matthew, this book is for you.

Available at Amazon and Barnes and Noble

David Alan Black (D.Theol., University of Basel) is professor of New Testament and Greek at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. He is the author or editor of 16 books, including Learn to Read New Testament Greek, Interpreting the New Testament, and Rethinking the Synoptic Problem. (Amazon and Barnes and Noble book links) He has written more than 100 articles in journals such as New Testament Studies, Biblica, and Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society.

Kingdom Voices: The New Faith-Based Voice Over Casting Site

I am honored an blessed to be a member of the new faith-based voice over casting site, Kingdom Voices.

KingdomVoices was conceived and created by Living Power and Dan Hurst, LLC. Dan is a seasoned voice over talent with over 25 years in the industry. Being experienced in both the industry and in ministry, Dan started to notice a gap between churches in need of quality voice-over work and the professional talent who were mainly focused on the standard business world. Knowing that there are many talented voice professionals who want to give back and/or have missional focuses in their own life, Dan developed and crafted the idea of KingdomVoices.

KingdomVoices exists to bridge this divide by creating a place where churches and other faith-based organizations can freely browse voice talent and reach out to them on an as-needed basis, or post their own projects to the site and allow members to reach out to them with an offering of their services. KingdomVoices doesn’t set rates or prices on what a voice can charge but it does suggest to all members that they offer reduced or reasonable rates to these organizations as their way of giving back.

Visit my Kingdom Voices profile page here.
