Our Gods Wear Spandex: The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes by Christopher Knowles

For anyone interested in the connection between occult/religion and comics, this book is a must read!

From occult underground to superhero! Was Superman's arch nemesis Lex Luthor based on Aleister Crowley? Can Captain Marvel be linked to the Sun gods in antiquity? In Our Gods Wear Spandex, Christopher Knowles answers these questions and brings to light many other intriguing links between superheroes and the enchanted world of esoterica. Occult students and comic book fans alike will discover countless fascinating connections, from little known facts such as that DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz started his career as H.P. Lovecraft's agent, to the tantalizingly extensive influence of Madame Blavatsky's Theosophy on the birth of comics, to the mystic roots of Superman. The book also traces the rise of the comic superheroes and how they relate to several cultural trends in the late 19th century, specifically the occult explosion in Western Europe and America. Knowles reveals the four basic superhero archetypes-the Messiah, the Golem, the Amazon, and the Brotherhood, and shows how the occult Bohemian underground of the early 20th century provided the inspiration for the modern comic book hero. With the popularity of occult comics writers like Invisibles creator Grant Morrison and V for Vendetta creator Alan Moore, the vast ComiCon audience is poised for someone to seriously introduce them to the esoteric mysteries. Chris Knowles is doing just that in this epic book. Chapters include: Ancient of Days, Ascended Masters, God and Gangsters, Mad Scientists and Modern Sorcerers, and many more. From the ghettos of Prague to the halls of Valhalla to the Fortress of Solitude and the aisles of BEA and ComiCon, this is the first book to show the inextricable link between superheroes and the enchanted world of esoterica.

"Why Four Gospels?" by David Alan Black

In "Why Four Gospels?" noted Greek and New Testament scholar David Alan Black, concisely and clearly presents the case for the early development of the gospels, beginning with Matthew, rather than Mark. But this is much more than a discussion of the order in which the gospels were written. Using both internal data from the gospels themselves and an exhaustive and careful examination of the statements of the early church fathers, Dr. Black places each gospel in the context of the early development of Christianity.

Though Markan priority is the dominant position still in Biblical scholarship, Dr. Black argues that this position is not based on the best evidence available, that the internal evidence is often given more weight than it deserves and alternative explanations are dismissed or ignored. If you would like an outline of the basis for accepting both early authorship of the gospels and the priority of Matthew, this book is for you.

Kingdom Voices: The New Faith-Based Voice Over Casting Site

I am honored an blessed to be a member of the new faith-based voice over casting site, Kingdom Voices.

KingdomVoices was conceived and created by Living Power and Dan Hurst, LLC. Dan is a seasoned voice over talent with over 25 years in the industry. Being experienced in both the industry and in ministry, Dan started to notice a gap between churches in need of quality voice-over work and the professional talent who were mainly focused on the standard business world. Knowing that there are many talented voice professionals who want to give back and/or have missional focuses in their own life, Dan developed and crafted the idea of KingdomVoices.

KingdomVoices exists to bridge this divide by creating a place where churches and other faith-based organizations can freely browse voice talent and reach out to them on an as-needed basis, or post their own projects to the site and allow members to reach out to them with an offering of their services. KingdomVoices doesn’t set rates or prices on what a voice can charge but it does suggest to all members that they offer reduced or reasonable rates to these organizations as their way of giving back.

"Death Of An American: The Killing Of John Singer" by David Fleisher and David M. Freedman

In January 1979 John Singer, a hard-working, self-reliant Utah farmer, was shot and killed by a state law enforcement officer during an arrest attempt.
His death came after six years of conflict with the courts over his insistence on educating his daughter at home, in accordance with his Mormon beliefs.
John Singer clearly broke the state law, but was the principle worth dying for?
A powerful examination of the events, after which Singer's wife filed a lawsuit through famed lawyer Gerry Spence against Utah officials, including the Governor, in a landmark case of parents' rights, and a loving family man who died in a fight for personal and religious freedom.

"The Two Babylons" by Alexander Hislop

Originally published as a pamphlet in 1853, and expanded to book length in 1858, "The Two Babylons" seeks to demonstrate a connection between the ancient Babylonian mystery religions and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Often controversial, yet always engaging, "The Two Babylons" comes from an era when disciplines such as archeology and anthropology were in their infancy, and represents an early attempt to synthesize many of the findings of these areas and Biblical truth.

Alexander Hislop (Born at Duns, Berwickshire, 1807; died Arbroath, 13 March 1865) was a Free Church of Scotland minister, infamous for his outspoken criticisms of the Roman Catholic Church. He was the son of Stephen Hislop (died 1837), a mason by occupation and an elder of the Relief Church. Alexander's brother was also named Stephen Hislop (lived 1817–1863) and became well known in his time as a missionary to India and a naturalist. Alexander was for a time parish schoolmaster of Wick, Caithness. In 1831 he married Jane Pearson. He was for a time editor of the Scottish Guardian newspaper. As a probationer he joined the Free Church of Scotland at the Disruption of 1843. He was ordained in 1844 at the East Free Church, Arbroath, where he became senior minister in 1864. He died of a paralytic stroke the next year after being ill for about two years. He wrote several books, his most famous being "The Two Babylons: Or The Papal Worship proved to be the worship of Nimrod and his wife."

"Messages From Heaven" by Jim Tetlow

A Biblical examination of the Queen of Heaven's messages in the End Times. Tens of millions visit apparition sites hoping to encounter Mary, the mother of Jesus. Many believe these increasing manifestations signal the advent of a new era on earth. Thousands of messages from the apparition of Mary indicate that we are entering a critical moment in world history - cataclysmic changes may soon occur. Those who follow the apparitions believe Mary has come to turn us back to God, while others insist that these events are either fabrications or the working of Satan. "Messages From Heaven" tests these messages in light of Scripture and seeks to answer the following questions: Why does the Queen of Heaven appeal to so many? What is her relation to the Roman Catholic Church? Are the Queen's messages heaven sent? Does the Word of God reveal the origin of these phenomena? Does the Bible anticipate apparitions, signs and wonders in the last days? How might the Mother of the Eucharist transform the world in the third millennium? Why does the Queen center all attention on the Eucharist? Jim Tetlow reviews volumes of apparitional messages searching for the common thread that ties all these events together. He presents a thorough and fair treatment of what may well be the most prolific series of supernatural events in history. Tetlow is also the producer of three documentaries, including the companion video, Messages From Heaven.

"The Rapture Plot" by Dave MacPherson

I am still a believer in the Pretribulation Rapture, but regardless of your position, this is a fascinating story. I have also read Dave's book, "The Incredible Cover-Up," in which he began his investigation of this topic. You can order a copy of  "The Incredible Cover-Up" at Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

What They Are Saying About ... THE RAPTURE PLOT!

Gary DeMar
(President American Vision): "A majority of prophecy writers and speakers teach that the church will be raptured before a future tribulational period. But did you know that prior to about 1830, no such doctrine existed. No one in all of church history ever taught pretribulational rapture. Dave MacPherson does the work of a journalistic private investigator to uncover the truth....The Rapture Plot is the never-before-told true story of the plot - how plagiarism and subtle document changes created the 'mother of all revisionisms.' A fascinating piece of detective work."

Robert H. Gundry (Professor Westmont College): "As usual, MacPherson out hustles his opponents in research on primary sources. His interpretation of those sources will be disputed at points, of course. But it is very unlikely that anyone will be able to explain away the avalanche of evidence that MacPherson produces for pretribulationism, as originating in Irvingite circle,s and despite counter claims as migrating from there into Darbyite circles."

C. S. Lovett (President Personal Christianity): You don't read very much of Dave MacPherson's work before you realize he is a dedicated researcher. Because his work has been so honest and open, his latest work The Rapture Plot has produced many red faces among some of the most recognized rapture writers of our time. When their work is compared to hi,s it is embarrassing for them to see how shallow their research is."

Robert A. Morey (President California Institute of Apologetics): "Regardless of where you land on the rapture issue, Dave MacPherson's books on the historical origins of the secret rapture doctrine are a 'must read.' His documentation seems not only in contex,t but ruthlessly honest. I recommend The Rapture Plot...."

R. J. Rushdoony (President Chalcedon): "Dave MacPherson has been responsible for major change in the eschatology of evangelical churches by his devastating studies of some of the central aspects thereof. In The Rapture Plot, MacPherson tells us of the strange tale of 'rapture' writings, revisions, cover-ups, alterations, and confusions. No one has equaled MacPherson in his research on the 'pretrib rapture.' Attempts to discredit his work have failed...."

About the Author: Born 1932 of Scotch/English descent, Dave MacPherson is a natural for British historical research. His calling was journalism. Receiving a BA in English in 1955, he spent 26 years as a newsman reporting and filming many notable events, persons, presidents, and dignitaries. His wife, the former Wanda Radar of Kansas City, has for years been his "research partner." Through these many years Dave has been honing a delightful writing style, a flair for journalistic sleuthing, and a meticulous research accuracy, which for over a quarter century has been focused on the history of pretrib rapturism which now culminates in The Rapture Plot.

Rick Warren Acknowledges Christians And Muslims Worship Same God by Elliott Nesch

Yesterday's article in the Life section from the Orange County Register (the same county where Rick Warren's Saddleback Church is located), is entitled "Rick Warren builds bridge to Muslims." It describes how Warren is a part of an effort named King's Way that is attempting to bring evangelical Christians and Muslims together. It goes on to state:
"The Rev. Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest and one of America's most influential Christian leaders, has embarked on an effort to heal divisions between evangelical Christians and Muslims by partnering with Southern California mosques and proposing a set of theological principles that includes acknowledging that Christians and Muslims worship the same God"
Whether or not Warren's theological principles directly say that Muslims and Christians worship the same God, this was a legitimate impression of the reporter. Though Warren claims that Jesus is the only way, his efforts to set aside theological differences and evangelism for the sake of "love of neighbor," "common ground," and "peace" with Muslims is a compromise of the greatest magnitude.
Rather than apologetics demonstrating the inconsistency between the Koran and the Bible, Allah and Yahweh, the co-authored document affirms that Christians and Muslims believe in "one God," share two central commandments: "love of God" and "love of neighbor," and commits both faiths to three goals: Making friends with one another, building peace and working on shared social service projects.
For this reason, in addition to Warren's P.E.A.C.E. Plan and endorsement of the A Common Word document, many Christians believe that Warren is not heralding the true Gospel of Jesus Christ but a global religion which comes together for social justice and world peace.

Hitler's Pope by John Cornwell

iconThe “explosive” (The New York Times) bestseller—now with a new introduction by the author

When Hitler 's Pope, the shocking story of Pope Pius XII that “redefined the history of the twentieth century” (The Washington Post ) was originally published, it sparked a firestorm of controversy both inside and outside the Catholic Church. Now, award-winning journalist John Cornwell has revisited this seminal work of history with a new introduction that both answers his critics and reaffirms his overall thesis that Pius XII, now scheduled to be canonized by the Vatican, weakened the Catholic Church with his endorsement of Hitler—and sealed the fate of the Jews in Europe.

Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution by Michael J. Behe

iconThe groundbreaking, "seminal work" (Time) on intelligent design that dares to ask, was Darwin wrong?

In 1996, Darwin's Black Box helped to launch the intelligent design movement: the argument that nature exhibits evidence of design, beyond Darwinian randomness. It sparked a national debate on evolution, which continues to intensify across the country. From one end of the spectrum to the other, Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key intelligent design text — the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it.
In a major new Afterword for this edition, Behe explains that the complexity discovered by microbiologists has dramatically increased since the book was first published. That complexity is a continuing challenge to Darwinism, and evolutionists have had no success at explaining it. Darwin's Black Box is more important today than ever.

In God's Name: An Investigation Into the Murder of Pope John Paul I by David Yallop

iconOnly thirty-three days after his election, Pope John Paul I , Albino Luciani , died in strange circumstances. Almost immediately rumors of a cover-up began to circulate around the Vatican. In his researches David Yallop uncovered an extraordinary story: behind the Pope's death kay a dark and complex web of corruption within the Church that involved the Freemasons, Opus Dei and the Mafia, and the murder of the "Pope's Banker" Roberto Calvi.
When first published in 1984 In God's Name was denounced by the Vatican yet became an award-winning international bestseller. In this new edition, Yallop brings the story up to date and reveals new evidence that has been long buried concerning the truth behind the Vatican cover-up. This is a classic work of investigative writing whose revelations will continue to reverberate around the world.

Wife of televangelist Benny Hinn files for divorce

ORANGE, Calif. (AP) — The wife of televangelist Benny Hinn has filed for divorce from the high-profile pastor, whose reputation as an advocate of prosperity gospel has attracted millions of followers and criticism from lawmakers and watchdog groups over his lavish lifestyle.
Suzanne Hinn filed the papers in Orange County Superior Court on Feb. 1, citing irreconcilable differences, after more than 30 years of marriage. The papers note the two separated on Jan. 26 and that Hinn has been living in Dana Point, a wealthy coastal community in southern Orange County.
"Pastor Benny Hinn and his immediate family were shocked and saddened to learn of this news without any previous notice," Benny Hinn Ministries said Thursday in a statement. "Although Pastor Hinn has faithfully endeavored to bring healing to their relationship, those efforts failed and were met with the petition for divorce that was filed without notice."

EXPLOSIVE IF TRUE! Researcher Claims Michelangelo Frescoes Of The Sistine Chapel Contain Divinely-Encoded Images Of The Shroud Of Turin

EXPLOSIVE IF TRUE! Researcher Claims Michelangelo Frescoes Of The Sistine Chapel Contain Divinely-Encoded Images Of The Shroud Of TurinThe Michelangelo Frescoes of the Sistine Chapel Contain Divinely-Encoded Images of the Shroud of Turin

Contact: Philip E. Dayvault, Datum Enterprise, 919-787-2448, siped@datument.com

RALEIGH, Nc., Sept. 14 -- RaidersNewsNetwork.com -- A new discovery reveals a "mystery" never before seen. Investigative researcher Philip E. Dayvault, of Raleigh, NC, found in 2003 that the famed Sistine Chapel Ceiling fresco, painted by Michelangelo in 1512 and located at the Vatican in Rome, Italy, is also painted in allegory. Although the central panels of the Ceiling, or "historicals", are illustrated for literal interpretation, they also contain unique symbolic expression. Once decoded, Dayvault discovered that this expression graphically depicts the Shroud of Turin, in full and complete order. The Shroud of Turin is the traditional burial cloth of Jesus Christ. It bears the Image of a crucified Man, consistent with the Scriptural depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

In addition, Dayvault, through a "divinely-inspired" discovery in 2003, found that the Last Judgment fresco, also painted by Michelangelo in 1541, and a portion of the Chapel Ceiling remarkably portray the encoded Face of the Man of the Shroud, including its distinctive features. What makes this discovery so unique is that the single, encoded Facial Image is comprised of portions of both paintings which were painted over a 33-year period, with a 24-year interim, under the tenures of three different Popes, and all-the-while under protest by Michelangelo. This encoded Image has never before been seen or mentioned, despite the fact that an estimated 500 million visitors have viewed the Sistine Chapel since 1512. Dayvault discovered the encoded Image in January 2003 and it took years of working alone to substantiate the find and make other observations. These findings actually corroborate the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin and depict an epiphanic Image of the Man of the Shroud, venerated by millions for centuries as Jesus Christ.

Reason, circumstances, and historical data preclude the encoded Images to be man-made. Furthermore, Dayvault believes, the Images are a result of divine inspiration, just like Holy Scripture. Michelangelo certainly painted the Chapel Ceiling and Last Judgment frescoes, but the Hand of God actually predetermined the hidden Images of the Man of the Shroud, Dayvault claims. These encoded Images remained hidden until 2003, when revealed to Dayvault. The Ceiling was painted during 1508-1512. The Last Judgment was painted during 1536-1541. Dayvault believes the encoded Image is a depiction of the actual Face of Jesus Christ in His Heavenly Glory, known as the "Beatific Vision." Amazingly, even the Banner of Israel is also divinely-encoded. His research has been peer-reviewed, with full concurrence of findings. Other discoveries by Dayvault, and heretofore unknown, relate directly to Scriptural prophecy, the Holy Trinity, the Bridegroom and His Church, and more...much more!

The office of a senior Vatican official was recently notified of this upcoming press release and was offered a preliminary viewing of a CD which graphically illustrates these findings; both as a courtesy notification of increased visitation, and forewarning of increased risks. The subject of the press release was not divulged for security reasons. No response was ever received from his office. Hopefully, a reply will be forthcoming.

It is important to note that the Shroud of Turin is a priceless artifact for the entire world, and not just a Catholic relic. It has been under the authority and in the custody of the Roman Catholic Church only since 1983!

Dayvault believes the Lord's message of divine forgiveness and blessed assurance for the Christian resurrection is vividly portrayed in the Shroud's Image. Jesus Christ seeks and offers a personal relationship with each of us--it is our choice to accept it, or not. However, it is a vital decision...and the consequences are eternal.

Dayvault, an evangelical Christian and a former FBI Special Agent, has followed and researched the Shroud since 1973. He is seeking to produce a DVD documentary which will graphically illustrate these highly visual images. Dayvault is currently writing a book to further describe this new and unique research. And, there is more...much more!

Prisons Removing Books on Faith From Libraries

Published: September 10, 2007

Behind the walls of federal prisons nationwide, chaplains have been quietly carrying out a systematic purge of religious books and materials that were once available to prisoners in chapel libraries.

The chaplains were directed by the Bureau of Prisons to clear the shelves of any books, tapes, CDs and videos that are not on a list of approved resources. In some prisons, the chaplains have recently dismantled libraries that had thousands of texts collected over decades, bought by the prisons, or donated by churches and religious groups.

Some inmates are outraged. Two of them, a Christian and an Orthodox Jew, in a federal prison camp in upstate New York, filed a class-action lawsuit last month claiming the bureau’s actions violate their rights to the free exercise of religion as guaranteed by the First Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Traci Billingsley, a spokeswoman for the Bureau of Prisons, said the agency was acting in response to a 2004 report by the Office of the Inspector General in the Justice Department. The report recommended steps that prisons should take, in light of the Sept. 11 attacks, to avoid becoming recruiting grounds for militant Islamic and other religious groups. The bureau, an agency of the Justice Department, defended its effort, which it calls the Standardized Chapel Library Project, as a way of barring access to materials that could, in its words, “discriminate, disparage, advocate violence or radicalize.”

Ms. Billingsley said, “We really wanted consistently available information for all religious groups to assure reliable teachings as determined by reliable subject experts.”

But prison chaplains, and groups that minister to prisoners, say that an administration that put stock in religion-based approaches to social problems has effectively blocked prisoners’ access to religious and spiritual materials — all in the name of preventing terrorism.

“It’s swatting a fly with a sledgehammer,” said Mark Earley, president of Prison Fellowship, a Christian group. “There’s no need to get rid of literally hundreds of thousands of books that are fine simply because you have a problem with an isolated book or piece of literature that presents extremism.”

The Bureau of Prisons said it relied on experts to produce lists of up to 150 book titles and 150 multimedia resources for each of 20 religions or religious categories — everything from Bahaism to Yoruba. The lists will be expanded in October, and there will be occasional updates, Ms. Billingsley said. Prayer books and other worship materials are not affected by this process.

The lists are broad, but reveal eccentricities and omissions. There are nine titles by C. S. Lewis, for example, and none from the theologians Reinhold Niebuhr, Karl Barth and Cardinal Avery Dulles, and the influential pastor Robert H. Schuller.

The identities of the bureau’s experts have not been made public, Ms. Billingsley said, but they include chaplains and scholars in seminaries and at the American Academy of Religion. Academy staff members said their organization had met with prison chaplains in the past but was not consulted on this effort, though it is possible that scholars who are academy members were involved.

The bureau has not provided additional money to prisons to buy the books on the lists, so in some prisons, after the shelves were cleared of books not on the lists, few remained.

A chaplain who has worked more than 15 years in the prison system, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is a bureau employee, said: “At some of the penitentiaries, guys have been studying and reading for 20 years, and now they are told that this material doesn’t meet some kind of criteria. It doesn’t make sense to them. They’re asking, ‘Why are our tapes being taken, why our books being taken?’ ”

Of the lists, he said, “Many of the chaplains I’ve spoken to say these are not the things they would have picked.”

The effort is unnecessary, the chaplain said, because chaplains routinely reject any materials that incite violence or disparage, and donated materials already had to be approved by prison officials. Prisoners can buy religious books, he added, but few have much money to spend.

Religious groups that work with prisoners have privately been writing letters about their concerns to bureau officials. Would it not be simpler, they asked the bureau, to produce a list of forbidden titles? But the bureau did that last year, when it instructed the prisons to remove all materials by nine publishers — some Muslim, some Christian.

The plan to standardize the libraries first became public in May when several inmates, including a Muslim convert, at the Federal Prison Camp in Otisville, N.Y., about 75 miles northwest of Manhattan, filed a lawsuit acting as their own lawyers. Later, lawyers at the New York firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison took on the case pro bono. They refiled it on Aug. 21 in the Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York.

“Otisville had a very extensive library of Jewish religious books, many of them donated,” said David Zwiebel, executive vice president for government and public affairs for Agudath Israel of America, an Orthodox Jewish group. “It was decimated. Three-quarters of the Jewish books were taken off the shelves.”

Mr. Zwiebel asked, “Since when does the government, even with the assistance of chaplains, decide which are the most basic books in terms of religious study and practice?”

The lawsuit raises serious First Amendment concerns, said Douglas Laycock, a professor of law at the University of Michigan Law School, but he added that it was not a slam-dunk case.

“Government does have a legitimate interest to screen out things that tend to incite violence in prisons,” Mr. Laycock said. “But once they say, ‘We’re going to pick 150 good books for your religion, and that’s all you get,’ the criteria has become more than just inciting violence. They’re picking out what is accessible religious teaching for prisoners, and the government can’t do that without a compelling justification. Here the justification is, the government is too busy to look at all the books, so they’re going to make their own preferred list to save a little time, a little money.”

The lists have not been made public by the bureau, but were made available to The Times by a critic of the bureau’s project. In some cases, the lists belie their authors’ preferences. For example, more than 80 of the 120 titles on the list for Judaism are from the same Orthodox publishing house. A Catholic scholar and an evangelical Christian scholar who looked over some of the lists were baffled at the selections.

Timothy Larsen, who holds the Carolyn and Fred McManis Chair of Christian Thought at Wheaton College, an evangelical school, looked over lists for “Other Christian” and “General Spirituality.”

“There are some well-chosen things in here,” Professor Larsen said. “I’m particularly glad that Dietrich Bonhoeffer is there. If I was in prison I would want to read Dietrich Bonhoeffer.” But he continued, “There’s a lot about it that’s weird.” The lists “show a bias toward evangelical popularism and Calvinism,” he said, and lacked materials from early church fathers, liberal theologians and major Protestant denominations.

The Rev. Richard P. McBrien, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame (who edited “The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism,” which did make the list), said the Catholic list had some glaring omissions, few spiritual classics and many authors he had never heard of.

“I would be completely sympathetic with Catholic chaplains in federal prisons if they’re complaining that this list is inhibiting,” he said, “because I know they have useful books that are not on this list.”
